How Does Butt Ugly Fit?
Butt Ugly; How the program fulfills the requirements outlined in the Alberta Learning Curriculum for both middle and high school students.
Middle School
Alberta Learning has identified a list of health and life skills to be achieved during the course of the students' education from Kindergarten to Grade 9.
They are:
- make effective personal decisions for current and future issues and challenges
- plan and set goals
- employ critical reflection
- cope with change and transition
- manage stress related to influences that can lead to tobacco use by learning and practicing resistance techniques
- analyze and manage health-related information
- recognize and expand personal skills
- explore service learning/volunteerism
Butt Ugly fulfills or exceeds most of the requirements of the Health and Life Skills as outlined in the Alberta Learning Curriculum for students at grades 6/7:
Through interactive learning and practice with peer educators in the program, students will;
- make effective personal decisions for current and future issues and challenges regarding tobacco use
- plan and set goals to resist tobacco use
- employ critical reflection on their own and others choice to use tobacco
- cope with change and transition in positive ways other than using tobacco
- manage stress without the use of tobacco
- analyze and manage health-related information on tobacco
- recognize, expand and practice personal skills in resisting tobacco
- recognize and manage tobacco industry messaging/ advertising that may influence their choice to use tobacco
High School
Participation in Butt Ugly as a peer educator fullfills most of the requirements of the Health and Life Skills as outlined in the Alberta Learning Cirriculum for students at Grades 10-12:
Through interactive investigation, learning, practice and program evaluation with other peer educators and through delivery of the Butt Ugly program to middle school students, high school students will;
- write and speak clearly, accurately and appropriately for the context of delivering tobacco reduction education to middle school-aged students
- understand the scientific method, the nature of science and technology and apply them critically to tobacco related information
- understand Canada's political, social and economic systems within a global context and apply them to the issue of tobacco use and control
- demonstrate desirable personal characteristics, such as respect, responsibility, fairness, honesty, caring, loyalty and commitment to democratic ideals as they deliver the Butt Ugly program and serve as role models to middle school-aged students
- recognize the importance of personal well-being, and appreciate how family and others contribute to that well-being
- know the requirements of an active healthy lifestyle
- understand and appreciate literature, the arts and the creative process in developing the script for the drama portion of the Butt Ugly program
- research an issue thoroughly, and evaluate the credibility and reliability of information sources as they prepare for the delivery of the program
- demonstrate critical and creative thinking skills in problem solving and decision making
- demonstrate competence in using information technologies as they research in preparation for delivering the program and updating program themes and information
- know how to work independently and as part of a team
- manage time and other resources needed to complete a task
- demonstrate initiative, leadership, flexibility and persistence
- evaluate their own endeavors and continually strive to improve
