The Butt Ugly teens divide the middle school classes into small workshop groups for the peer education portion of the program. Their goals are to educate, to develop and practice refusal skills, and finally to illicit healthy attitudes and personal commitments from the younger students. Each goal is accomplished in a different way. First, 10 key points of information, as introduced in the play, are reinforced in a fun cooperative format using cards, pictures and a prop.
Secondly, focusing on the need for resistance-training students role-play various responses to 'tobacco exposure' situations. By the last phase of the workshop attitudes have shifted perceptibly. Students who were non-committal have come to a decision about tobacco. Those that were anti-tobacco to begin with (the majority at this age) have identified values and strategies to remain so.The final activity of the workshop is an acknowledgment of their decision about future tobacco use and personalized strategies to maintain that commitment.
